For a business
expansion or re-location, Shelburne County is
truly "Open for Business"
Shelburne
County is an attractive place to do business. We
have the third lowest commercial tax rate in
Nova Scotia and we have a mature and willing
work force. With a Canada series 100 highway
creating a corridor through the entire county,
driving times are seldom an issue with workers
and goods are easily transported to hubs and
ports in Shelburne, Yarmouth and Halifax.
In addition to a
commercial fishing fleet operating out of the
Port of Shelburne, there are hundreds of smaller
fishing vessels operating from wharves
throughout the County, as well as many fish
brokers and several fish processing plants.
There is a firm mining high-quality quartz for use
in pre-cast concrete, exterior wall systems,
roofing stone and other purposes and shipping to
customers throughout North America.
A major natural
gas company has located its offices in Shelburne, with the
intent on servicing the needs of several
off-shore exploratory projects.
Tourism
development continues in all parts of the
County. Attractions include many festivals,
environmental and nature-based tourism, birding,
boating and hiking, as well as history,
architecture and museums.
The former
military installation in Sandy Point has been
converted to a professional film sound stage and has
recently been used to produce several films,
including Wilby Wonderful, Virginia's Run and
others. Other films shot in the area include The
Scarlet Letter, Mary Stallings War, as well as
documentary features and nature and marine
specials.
Several
small-to-medium manufacturing firms in the area,
producing furniture, electronic components and
pre-manufactured houses, among other goods.

In addition to
its location in the "banana belt" of
Nova Scotia - which affords it one of the
provinces best climates - Shelburne County is
rich in resources for businesses and
professionals. These include: Quality
Workforce
With a population of 16,000, the County boasts
one of the most mature and loyal workforces in
the province. There are unskilled, semi-skilled
and highly-skilled workers for a variety of
service, manufacturing and knowledge-based
businesses. Thirty five percent of the workforce
has University or college degrees or
post-secondary certificates or diplomas. Variety
of Facilities
Throughout the County, there are facilities
available for start-up and on-going business
enterprise. There are real estate agents in all
parts of the County who can assist businesses in
locating the facility suiting most needs. For a

Retail Environment
In both the Eastern and Western parts of the
County, the retail environment is expanding. In
addition to a variety of smaller retail shops,
there are a growing number of larger operations
in the County.
Both Shelburne and Barrington have large
hardware and lumber stores, and there are
several plant and garden centres, drug stores
and book stores. Both regional supermarket
chains operate large, new facilities in the County. Quality
School System
With a network of elementary "feeder"
schools, the County has three high schools, with
a total of 1200 students. The new Shelburne
Regional High School is state-of-the-art in its
design and layout, affording students the best
facilities available. The new Barrington
Regional High School will open in spring of
2006, with similar facilities. The
Nova Scotia Community College recently
unveiled its newly renovated space, which brings
together the Centre for Student Success,
Business Office, Customized Training office, the
Library and the Bookstore. Programs at Shelburne
Campus represent the following Academic Schools:
Access; Business; Health and Human Services; and
Trades and Technology.
The Centre for
Student Success provides a convenient cluster of
services for students, in a prominent location
on campus. Services include academic and
personal counseling, career planning and
assessment, a student resources centre, job
postings and placement assistance, skills
workshops and financial information on student
loans and scholarships. Support services are
also available through student services for
students with special needs. The Registrar's
office assists students with course selection,
transfer credits, course costs and other
academic matters.
